PA’s are highly qualified healthcare professionals who are prepared through a demanding academic and clinical curriculum to provide healthcare services under physician supervision. PA’s gather and evaluate medical data and participate in the process of clinical decision making, diagnosis and therapeutic management. The PA is typically the initial contact for the patient, taking the history, performing the physical exam and ordering appropriate lab and radiology tests. The PA may assist in surgeries and participate in complex diagnostic procedures. The PA improves the patients access to healthcare and enhances the physician’s effectiveness. The physician-PA team is effective because of the similarities in physician and PA training and the PA’s commitment to practice with supervision.
